CERF Examination CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) examinations are performed at the request of an owner, breeder or veterinarian to evaluate dogs for inherited eye diseases. The Canine Eye Registration Foundation was founded in an attempt to decrease the incidence of genetic eye conditions in purebred dogs. Dogs that are free of such eye disease are given a CERF number that appears on the AKC papers.
