Just like humans, pets can develop various eye conditions and vision problems that can impact their overall health and quality of life. Regular eye examinations can help identify and address these issues early, ensuring that your pet remains healthy and comfortable.

Why are eye wellness exams important for your pets?

Pets might not exhibit obvious signs of vision problems or discomfort until the issue has advanced, which is why it’s crucial to monitor their eyes and behavior. By regularly monitoring your pet’s eye health, we can help prevent more severe problems and reduce the need for advanced treatments.

What do our eye wellness exams include?

Exams are performed by expert veterinary ophthalmologists and include essential ophthalmic diagnostics. Each wellness exam includes:

  • Schirmer Tear Test – Small, metered, paper strips are placed under the lower eyelids for 60 seconds to measure your pet’s tear production.
  • Tonometry – Similar to the “air puff” test at your eye doctor, this test uses a variety of instruments to measure the pressure inside the eye.
  • Indirect Ophthalmoscopy – Using a headset and diopter lenses, the ophthalmologist examines the structures in the back of the eye, including the vitreous humor, retina, and optic nerve.
  • Biomicroscopy – A hand-held microscope called a slit-lamp allows the ophthalmologist to view lesions or abnormalities within the eyelids, the surface of the eyeball, and the inside structures of the eye, such as the lens and iris.

How often should I bring my pet?

Both cats and dogs should undergo eye wellness exams once per year. In the event that an underlying condition is recognized, additional testing and treatment may be recommended. If you know your pet has an underlying eye condition, we recommend scheduling a standard eye exam which includes additional testing by our veterinary ophthalmologist.
